Hello! Thanks for checking out our blog, we truly appreciate it. I will keep this introductory post short and sweet as there will be plenty of opportunities to get to know us in the upcoming blog posts. My name is Steve Schutz, I live with my wife Kristin and our two dogs, Remi and Luna Mae, in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. I was born here in Detroit Lakes but I spent most of my childhood in the small town of Kimball, Minnesota.
Growing up in a farming community I was always intrigued by farming and was oftentimes jealous of my classmates who grew up on farms. I knew that someday I wanted to have a farm of my own. My wife grew up between Chicago and Milwaukee, and though she always enjoyed the outdoors, I don’t think she ever imagined moving to Minnesota and living on a farm. Luckily for me, she is a pretty good sport and supports me following my dream. She has even taken an interest in chickens and will be starting her flock in the spring.
Over the next six months or so we will be making quite a few changes or additions to Whiskey Creek Farm, I have a long list of projects to finish, and we have a few exciting announcements to make. Some of the projects we will be tackling include building a chicken coop and starting our own flock, planting more apple trees to finish our orchard, planting nut trees to compliment our chestnut tree, fencing a pasture, selectively logging our woods, building raised beds for our garden, and many more. Along the way, we will be blogging our experience and sharing what we learn.
This blog will consist of farm/project updates, how-to’s, what-not-to-do’s, product reviews/recommendations, recipes, and lessons learned along the way. We look forward to sharing our adventure with you! Stop by next week to read about raising bacon seeds, and finishing up projects before winter.
